Lawn Care for Beginners
There are so many factors that go into maintaining your lawn! It definitely isn’t easy, and not something that can be transformed overnight. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Have you recently moved into your home and now find yourself with a lawn to take care of? Or, are wanting your lawn to be the best in the neighborhood this year? Well then, this article is for you! You may be wondering, “Where do I even begin?”.
A good place to start is getting into a mowing routine. It is best to mow your lawn at least once per week, but twice a week (or every five days) is best during the growing season. It is good to set your mower blade on the higher end, especially in brutally hot months. This will help to provide some more shade for the roots as well as promote a bit more water retention. Additionally, this will help create a more resilient and drought-resistant grass. If you don’t care for mowing your lawn, we recommend contacting a local landscaper to do it for you! Simply trimming your grass can lead to great results. The routines don’t just stop with mowing, it’s also good to get on a good watering schedule. Your lawn should receive approximately one inch of water per week.
Depending on your irrigation system and water pressure, this could take an hour or more per area. For warm season grasses, including Bermuda grass and Zoysia grass, twice a week is usually enough. Cool season grasses, including Fescue, will most likely need additional irrigation when the temperatures start to approach ninety degrees (2-3 times per week). This “long and deep, but not often” approach encourages the roots to reach far down into the soil and makes your turf stronger and more beautiful.
That may seem like a lot, but if you’re getting parched outside, chances are your grass is too. (Here’s a quick tip: A good indicator of your grass needing water is when it turns bluish- grey in color when exposed to direct sunlight.). If you really want your watering to go a long way, make sure you’re watering before 10 a.m. Many homeowners make the mistake of watering midday. While this may be the most convenient, it can also all be for nothing.
If you’re watering in the heat of the day, it can be pointless because most of the water will evaporate and it won’t properly nourish your lawn. Once you have your mowing and watering down, your lawn will need fertilization and weed control. Warmer states like Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina require those lawn care practices throughout the year.
This is mainly because the temperatures don’t really get low enough for your lawn to freeze over. While this is a good thing, it also means your lawn needs constant attention throughout the year. Why not let a professional handle this for you?
