It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for spring to arrive, but it is finally here. After the crazy last couple of years we’ve experienced as a nation, we may need some extra ways to boost our serotonin. There are so many spring activities we can’t wait to do with our friends and family. The best part is, they have added benefits to your mental and emotional wellbeing.
Gardening – Many of us probably have memories from when we were younger gardening with our parents or grandparents. This is the primetime of year to bring this memory back to life! Create new memories with your kids and grandkids, or take some time to yourself and start a new hobby with gardening. After all, gardening can improve your physical health and the nutritious food it produces is just an added bonus. Did you know that gardening also has therapeutic benefits? From relaxation and stress relief, interacting with nature — even in the simple act of viewing trees or visiting garden-like settings — can have dramatic therapeutic results.
Organized Sports – It’s time to disconnect from our tablets and cell phones and get outside for some backyard ballgames! Whether you’re playing with your kids, friends or just practicing on your own, it’s a great way to get some exercise while also reducing stress. Studies show that playing sports can be one of the best ways for kids to get their recommended one hour of daily exercise. There are several sports that all you really need is a ball. Such as soccer and football. You can use any items you already have in your home for goal posts or nets.
Backyard BBQ – Time to substitute those warm wintery soups for some spring BBQ! Cooking has therapeutic value physically, cognitively and socially. It’s a great way to come together as a family and create something together! It doesn’t hurt that you get a delicious meal out of it too. There are many dinner table games you can play while you’re enjoying your meal outdoors. One that some of us may have grown up playing frequently was “Telephone”. If you’ve never played before, it’s very simple. One person starts out by whispering a phrase (hint: the crazier the phrase, the better) to the person next to them, that person whispers what they think they heard to the person next to them. So on and so forth. By the time everybody has heard the phrase, the last person says the phrase out loud. The phrase you start with and the phrase you end with are very rarely the same thing. The results are always hilarious!
Of course, nothing can ruin these outdoor activities like mosquitoes can. In addition to making your spring and summer itchy and uncomfortable, mosquitoes can spread a variety of diseases that can affect humans and pets. They have even been known to carry heartworms (yuck)! Atlanta, Charlotte and Greenville are all mosquito hotspots in the country, with surrounding cities just as likely to have these pesky visitors. Luckily, King GREEN is here to help. Now is the perfect time to get started with our Mosquito Control program.
